Robot Death Monkey : Metal
This time around for ROBOT DEATH MONKEY the impetuous was to push the boat out. As the continuation of the Gary Dunham Saga, in which we place the band’s honorary fifth member and man of legend in a situation he feels comfortable with, as long as it’s funny and involves some level of epic-ness. After we’d shown Gary smoking, shown him playing guitar and shown him as the captain of his own (small) sea vessel, the only logical step was to pit him against Death himself. Originally a story about how Gary would sell his soul to the Devil for a tab and a pint, the main thing that clashed was the specific look of the Devil himself; maintaining a level of quality even though it was designed to be a comedy. So, out of the necessity of maintaining said quality, I had recently watched John Singleton’s BOYZ IN THE HOOD and Ingmar Bergman’s THE SEVENTH SEAL and immediately had an idea of how the idea should go. It’s a pastiché in the clearest sense, the poor man’s production, blending some cinematic influences and references for maximum comedy effect. The one thing is that it is incredibly self-reverence; every one of these videos is it’s own in-joke and one which we hope others can partake in and enjoy through a shared respect for the music but for the low-fi style that is being demonstrated. It’s as deliberate as it needs to be and in continuing the work with the band, this is a great example on how much further the ideas and concepts with the band can go. Again, as will always be the case, as long as they’re fun, that will never be a problem.
