Iron Altar : Metal

A dingy, period set story about a small group of hooded zealots on pilgrimage to find the ‘iron altar’ to pray to their space overlords. A simple concept reminiscent of “B” movie stylings. Taking direct inspiration from the bands own direction and design, was a direct adaption to complement the entire final package for their upcoming album release.

Set to a low-key “B” movie style, in a period reminiscent of the dark ages with a supernatural hint, the video held the hallmarks of genre’s that interests me greatly, allowing me to explore the serious tone of the character plight whilst also being tongue-in-cheek. The supernatural element, directly “Lovecraft-ian”, saw me introduce the concept of the Cthulu, interplanetary life and inter-dimensional travel, set to a dark ages primitive landscape. To accompany the story, the band section, set in a dingy, industrial-like location would complement the overall look.

The development of the concept saw me bring personality and depth to the story, giving further action to each of the zealot characters; all very similar but distinguishable from each other. It added a layer to the simplicity of the story and the mystery of what the men were ultimately seeking. The infighting and eventual deaths within the group pale in comparison when they are presented with the altar and its owner, at the end of the video. The low-grade nature of the visuals added somewhat to the tone of the piece.
