Steve Heron : Indie
Pitched more a personal project, around the time I was finalizing work on Steve’s PICTURESQUE, initially pitched as a long narrative social realist story about a couple, spanning over years of their relationship, getting to the point where the woman dies suddenly in strange circumstances. Heartbroken, the man packs away his things in the home they had created together but decides to go to the place where they first met; the beach (by the saltwater). It was pitched more as a short film with a music video in the middle or a music video with an epic prologue. It seemed like an innovative concept however, it just couldn’t get off the ground due to a number of stumbling blocks. On one day however, when the weather was terrible, I had decided to begin editing SALTWATER, finding that the pacing came naturally and the material, I found fascinating to work from; it looked amazing. On that same day, I braced the wind and rain to shoot down by the water, the waves riding high, the walkways closed and the Police ushering people from the water’s edge. Zoom lens in hand, I caught the footage before being asked to leave. What you get is something that feels inherently visceral. Even the location where the band was performing was in a music studio basement in the dead of winter that adds such a haunting feel.
